GSA Board Progress Report - May 2009

E-mail Print PDF

Dear GreySheeters,

This is your second update from the Board of Trustees of GreySheeters Anonymous World Service.  We began this series of updates to the fellowship to keep you informed of our progress towards our first World Service Conference in Chicago in August 2010 (the day before the annual Chicago GreySheet Retreat).

As you know, the purpose of the World Service organization is to support meetings and individual GreySheeters as they fulfill their primary purpose - to stay abstinent and to carry the message to the still suffering compulsive eater.

At the World Service Conference, you will send your Area Intergroup Delegates to elect the first elected Board and vote on a variety of proposals that will direct the work of that Board.  If you have not yet established your Area Intergroup, please see the information on the GreySheet website to get started.  http://www.greysheet.org/cms/intergroup-areas.html

In this monthly report, I would like to tell you about:
  • New Officers on the Board
  • Open Positions on the Board
  • Conference Progress

New Officers

In March 2009, after eleven years of service as the founding Chair of the World Service Board of Trustees, Marvin A., passed the baton to Esther Helga G. who is now the chair for the Board.  You may have seen Esther Helga's post to the GreyNet of gratitude to Marvin for all he has done to create and develop our very own service structure.  Marvin continues to serve on the Board as a Trustee.

Grainne M. became Vice Chair, assuming the role long held by Ralph F. who has also earned our appreciation for his many contributions to everything the Board has accomplished in the last ten years.  For example, Ralph has worked on the Bylaws and other matters with our attorneys.  Ralph also continues to serve on the Board.  Barbara R. is the current Secretary and Ari L. is the current Treasurer.

Open Positions on the Board

Our Bylaws call for thirteen members.  Currently we have ten.  We need permanent Assistant Treasurers and Assistant Secretaries.  We also need officers of the Board who will chair the Nominating and the Professionals, Hospitals, and Institutions committees.  The Bylaws call for officers to be at least eighteen years of age, have five years of back-to-back GreySheet abstinence, and to be able to receive email.  All members of the Board also attend the in-person Annual Meeting of the Board which occurs in New York the Friday evening before the New York GreySheet Round Up.  Terms of office are designed to be three years.  If you are interested in strengthening your abstinence through service, please contact a member of the Nominating Committee, Grainne M. Conference Progress

The Board of Trustees has approved the master plan developed by the Conference Committee Chair, Gayla Z., who is now assembling the leadership team that will oversee preparations for this important event in our fellowship's history.

One of the most important tasks faced by the planning team in the next year is the development of proposals that will describe how our fellowship operates.  Nothing is official in a 12-step fellowship until the Intergroup Delegates at the World Service Conference have reviewed, discussed and blessed it.  Everything-from the way we handle our finances at the group, intergroup and Board level, to the way we reach out to those who still suffer-is subject to Conference approval.

In June, each Area Delegate will receive an invitation to participate in a Pre-Conference Focus Group, a phone bridge forum where each Delegate will have the chance to voice the issues and concerns of members who attend meetings in their Area Intergroups. Delegates will then have the opportunity to work on the development of proposals for presentation to the Conference, review all proposals and participate in Pre-Conference Delegate Assemblies via the phone bridge.

If you are interested in staying abstinent and are looking for ways to give service, why not help with the Conference Planning Initiative?  For more information, contact Gayla Z. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Look for the June update as a letter to the GSRs, report on the website, post to the GreyNet, and article in the quarterly Shades of Grey newsletter.

Grainne A. Matthews

Vice-Chair
Board of Trustees

P.S.  If you received this letter as a General Service Representative or group contact and you are no longer the GSR or contact, please pass it on to the appropriate person and please ask that person to update your group's registration so that we may have effective contact with your group.
